War is for adults, dying is for children. A collection of war poems online which tries to account for the human suffering which underlies the comic book violence of warfare. What is the human cost?
The child of fifteen shot face to face: "I had a wife and family to go back to." The paratrooper dead at dawn on Crete: "Gott mit uns" on his belt. Blastback! The thermometer explodes. The hammers are stripped from the clocks. The universe jolts on giraffe legs. Monday Blows a hole through Tuesday. He and his wife are together at the end, Being boiled alive in the water tank They thought would offer refuge from the flames. Of the many ways there are to die, This one Cannot be said to be user-friendly. Zex metal sex metal zex metal sex metal Do metal come metal go metal be metal — Mate metal do metal be metal burn metal — Mating and melding with human flesh. Her teeth are loose, Her gums are raw and bleeding And her hair Is already starting to fall out. Her story Is too sad to continue. Struck by a god, Patroclus reels, And seeks his footing in a chorus-cry of gulls: The wheeling voices of the toppling sea, Their discord shrill as arrows in their fall. Doomed down to his shadow, Patroclus falls, Falls in the roar of the toppling world As Hector steps and drives, As Hector drives his spear to kill, To take beneath the ribs and drive, To drive the great bronze blade To the heartbeat's stagger, home. And the reeling gulls Pull back, pull back and wing. Pull back to the wind's mock, to the heights Where Ida answers Samothrace And shuns the battle. White wings whipped to the sea's scud. The North Aegean foaming on the shore. |
